Trinity College - UK

The principles of Trinity College, together with members of English Heritage, the Project architects and consulting engineers were unable to source a lift manufacturer that could provide a solution to meet the requirements of their catering department, to install a goods lifts in the main hall of the university.

The criteria stated that two individual lift cars must operate independently within a fixed lift shaft in order to provide the fast transfer of food trolleys from the basement sited kitchens to guests attending functions and banquets.

The installation had to be of aesthetic appearance and retract fully in to the floor paving of the hall when not in use, comply fully with the food hygiene regulations and be of a safe, stable design, that is certified as fit for purpose.

A major lift manufacturer recommended to the committee, that Saxon Lifts be asked to provide a solution, and after an initial meeting with Saxon personnel the company was contracted to carry out design proposals to meet the criteria.

The resulting design is safe, functional, visually pleasing up or down and this was promptly accepted by the University and a formal order was placed to design, manufacture, install and commission.

Certified drawings were submitted for approval, showing a lift shaft raised out of the floor, utilising duplex hydraulic rams, to reach the required operating height, when shot bolts were to be deployed to lock the lift shaft fixed in place.

The two lift cars raise and lower independently within the shaft in the manner of normal goods hoists, each driven by a compact multiple scissor lift mechanism.
